UCF’s Blake Bortles and Storm Johnson go to Jacksonville

With the 2014 NFL Draft coming to an end last night, there are two UCF players who will be looking to crack the opening day roster in 2014.

Quarterback Blake Bortles and running back Storm Johnson will both be trying to make the same team, as they were selected in the 1st and 7th round respectively by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

A Central Florida native who attended Oviedo High, Bortles led UCF to its best ever record in 2013 (12-1), beating Baylor 52–42 in the Fiesta Bowl, which he was named MVP of.

Johnson had three touchdowns in the same bowl game.

Even though he was picked six rounds later, it might be Johnson who makes an impact first. Jacksonville plans to take it slow with developing Bortles, according to GM David Caldwell:

He acknowledges the Jaguars are in a marathon, not a sprint.

“We don’t think he’s ready to play,” he says the next day. “And we are going to go with Chad [Henne] this year. We feel good about what he can do for our team this year, and Blake will be ready to play in 2015.”

A plan already is in place to bring along Bortles methodically. He will get extra work on the field and in the classroom, in the offseason and in training camp. Even during the season, he will get an inordinate amount of seven-on-seven reps, and coaches and receivers will spend time working with him after practice.
