THE GIST: Links we love, Jan. 19

Things we read and loved this week. Driver, roll up the partition please:

Erstwhile Orlando performance artist Brian Feldman is back, and has announced a 10th-anniversary performance of The Feldman Dynamic, his signature piece. We wrote an article in 2011 comparing Feldman to Marina Abramovic. Here is a video of Abramovic explaining how to drink a glass of water, which, frankly, kind of made me tired. Maybe Feldman should make a video explaining how to eat dinner with your family.

To go with our review of Laura van den Berg’s sharp new short story collection, The Isle of Youth, an interview with the author on Kirkus Reviews and a self-interview with the author on The Nervous Breakdown. “What’s the strangest place you’ve ever been?” “My home state of Florida is pretty strange. We have hurricanes, swamps, alligators, heat that will melt you, a religious theme park called Holy Land, and, it seems, more than our fair share of serial killers.”

ArtNews says that with the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the city finally has “the art museum it deserves.” We’re pretty sure they meant that in a nice way, because as yet there seem to no exhibits addressing skyscrapers built on coke profits, homeless sex offenders living under a bridge, bath salts-fueled face-ripping or systematic police harassment.

SPEARWATCH: The Red Bull #Wings2Walls Project reveal party is TONIGHT, 5-8pm: “Stop by to see artist Andrew Spear complete the mural with the image of the winning DJ live during the event. There will also be performances by Red Bull Thre3Style DJ’s.”

This Tumblr exists. Theater groups, now might be a good time to step up your PR photos lest you find yourself represented.

Fox TV announces a reboot of Carl Sagan’s classic miniseries Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey, with Neil DeGrasse Tyson as host and OMG OMG OMG. We are star-struck! (Sorry.) It was the cover story in last week’s Parade, which I do not think I’ve read since I was about 12. “A photon walks into a bar and orders a drink,” Tyson begins, his resonant bass voice bubbling up from his 6-foot-2 frame. “The bartender says, ‘Do you want a double?’ And the photon says, ‘No, I’m traveling light.’”
