Orlando Fringe Review: Donating Sperm To My Sister’s Wife
As a “liberal Southern road comic” discussing hot-button topics like lesbianism, abortion, the metric system, and ketchup on eggs, Stewart Huff is used to having punches thrown at him in redneck bars across the Bible Belt (which apparently extends from New England to California, with atheistic holes in NYC and LA). Fortunately, he’s received a much warmer welcome at the Orlando Fringe for his very funny stand-up showcase Donating Sperm To My Sister’s Wife; at least no one has taken a crap on his car windshield…yet.
For starters, Huff wants to make clear that it’s his sister-in-law who will be giving birth to his child; he may be a “fucked up uncle baby daddy” but he’s not quite Kentucky enough to impregnate his own sister. That story — involving unromantic doctor’s office restrooms with too-small specimen cups — only makes up a small portion of Huff’s comedic monologue, which delves into the foul-mouthed “Faulkernesque poetry” of the “swamp people” and other resolutely politically incorrect citizens who populate America’s red states.
Though Huff’s material and delivery is hysterically funny, he’s also surprisingly political and philosophical, making him a kind of anti-Jeff Foxworthy. Whether observing the hypocrisy of having an “in God we trust” license plate on a car but locking its doors, or admiring the ineffable intelligence of his mentally handicapped sibling, Huff has a way with words that’s deep-fried on the outside, but tender and juicy as a Chick-fil-a sandwich in the middle. His set could use a stronger ending that links back to the titular topic in order to make it more theatrical, but this is one of the funniest one-man Fringe offerings you’ll find this side of the Mason-Dixon Line.
