Is Publix going to buy Whole Foods?

June 6, 2014

Rumors were swirling today that Florida-based grocery chain Publix is planning to buy its hipster-grocery-paradise competitor, Whole Foods. The rumors started when live market analysis website Briefing.com posted Thursday that they were “hearing chatter that privately held Publix is interested in WFM.”

Neither of the grocery chains will comment on the rumors at this time. In an email to the Tampa Bay Business Journal, Brian West, media and community relations manager for Publix, said, “It is a rumor, and we don’t comment on rumors.”

Even if a merger between these two grocery giants is imminent, we’ve still got the opening of our Trader Joe‘s to look forward to later this month. As long as no one messes with our Joe’s goods, we’ll remain happy foodies.

I’m all for this. Maybe it will bring Whole Food’s pretentious high prices down to a reasonable level.

NO, just NO! Publix will ruin WFM!!!

This felt like a poorly aimed stab at getting Whole Foods customers all pissed off and ready to jump ship for Trader Joe’s. No one who shops at or works for Whole Foods wants a company like Publix taking it over.

I think it will create higher prices, or at least, keep them high, like they are. Reduce the competition for Publix.
