The Fashion Square Mall has clearly been fading for the last few years, with the number of empty storefronts inside seemingly increasing every month. (Billy Manes wrote a bit about that in our “Highway 50 Revisited” cover story, December 2011.) But two major Fashion Square Mall construction projects — Hershey’s Ice Cream Shake Shoppe Arcade and a Starwood “Element by Westin” hotel — are hoping to help turn the Colonial Drive shopping center’s fortunes around.

Here’s a peek at the latest progress as seen on a recent stroll around the Fashion Square Mall:

Inside the future Hershey’s Ice Cream Shake Shoppe Arcade and Bowling Alley, located on the mall’s second floor near the cinema.

These sculptures and arcade games will eventually be installed inside:

There are many sadly vacant storefronts around the mall…

But also some corners of unexpected art:

Finally, this is the wall where the Starwood hotel is supposedly going, though there were no signs or sounds of activity during my visit.

The mall experience is dying, even at the flagship stores. People can’t be bothered driving to a shopping center and physically looking for things when all of us can just buy stuff online from the comforts of our own homes. Even the eateries and the shopping stalls are half empty at FSM these days.

I’m not sure I see the hotel project working out in that location, though I certainly admire the developers’ ambitions.
