Bittersweet 16 party at Bar-BQ Bar this Saturday
When Bar-BQ Bar originally opened in 1998, they actually served up Southern cooking as their primary focus, but eventually the bar overcame the BBQ to transform the downtown dive/institution, and now 16 years later, the bar will close just 16 days after its 16th birthday. They’re feeling bittersweet; co-owner Ashley Mccammon Dishman says it’s been her longest relationship. Co-owner Hurst Marshall remembers early days before they knocked the kitchen down to build Sky Sixty when he could walk out the bar’s back door and find himself in the middle of a show at Barbarella. The history there is deep and uniquely Orlando.
There are a ton of memories circulating the web as people reflect on this pivotal downtown bar set (Bar-BQ Bar, Sky Sixty, Eye Spy) using the hashtags #ripbbqbar, #bbqbar, #bbqbooth and, of course, on Bar-BQ Bar’s own Instagram, @barbqbar:
Despite the grave situation, Bar-BQ Bar still wants to party to the end, so this Saturday, they’re having a Bittersweet 16 party at all three bars, and all are encouraged to come out and join the final countdown to the bar’s closing on Aug. 31. (RSVP) While you’re there, you may want to take stock of the many knick knacks and assorted items that clutter the bars, because later this month, there will be an auction of select items for those looking for a keepsake (perfect for nostalgic folks who met their partners at Bar-BQ Bar, turned 21 there, celebrated a new job with $2 wells, or just punched the clock on the patio week after week). We’ll post information about the auction as soon as we get it.
