All 68 films from the Venice Film Festival’s “Future Reloaded” program showed up online today. I cherry picked a few by directors that I liked, but they’re all so short (between 1:30 and 3m) that you should dig through the entire playlist on YouTube. There is a lot of good, fun stuff in there.

****

Necktie
Dir: Yorgos Lanthimos
Runtime: 1:45

Middle school girls have an old fashion duel with pistols and seconds (reenacting Barry Lyndon?). Very charming.

****

24 Frames Per Century
Dir: Athina Rachel Tsangari
Runtime: 2:30

Two lonely projectors discuss whether someone will there to change their reel while projecting David Lean’s Brief Encounter.  (This was my favorite, personally.)

****

(No Title)
Dir: Abbas Kiarostami
Runtime: 1:30

Two kids play a practical joke on an old man, who hams it up for the camera.

****

50:50
Dir: Hong Sang-soo
Runtime: 1:30

Even sharing a cigarette comes with social politics.

****

My Mother
Dir: Kim Ki-duk
Runtime: 2m

The director’s mother goes out of her way to feed her son when he calls to tell her that he’s coming over.

****

(No Title)
Dir: Jazmin Lopez
Runtime: 2m

Incest is the best? I guess?

****

(No Title)
Dir: Celina Murga
Runtime: 2m

If only all kids were this cool at the movies. Watch for the boy who picks his nose and almost eats it.

****

(No Title)
Dir: Walter Salles
Runtime: 2:30

Minutes before the new Pope is introduced, a daughter thinks about her mother.

Did you realize that the scene in Necktie is actually a reenactment of a scene
in Barry Lyndon and that the quote at the end is from Baudelaire?

  • Rob Boylan

It’s been ages since I’ve seen Barry Lyndon. I didn’t connect the two, no.
