Snowpiercer

It looks like there will be a new box office king in South Korea as Bong Joon-ho’s pan-cultural sci-fi blockbuster Snowpiercer has taken over the Korean box office this weekend, piling up over 3 million admissions and counting in the first five days of release. At that pace, it has a very good shot as surpassing the 13m admissions that Bong’s all time record holder The Host racked up in 2006. (It bothers me to no end that we only talk about box office take instead of admissions when talking about North American records.)

Normally that’s not much more than a curiosity. The Host itself only squeezed out about $2m when it was released in theaters here. Previous record holders like The Thieves and Slimido didn’t make an impact at all (both are on Netflix Instant if you’re curious, as is The Host).

But this time it’s a film to get antiquated with.

With such a western cast — including Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, Alison Pill, Jamie Bell, John Hurt and Ed Harris — Snowpiercer actually has a shot of making an impact in North America as well. The film finds the world in a new ice age thanks to an environmental disaster, with life on the planet wiped out aside from those lucky enough to have found a place on the Snowpiercer, a large train driven by a perpetual motion engine and class rage.

The Weinstein Company owns the distribution rights in North America, but no date has been announced.

-RIP Eileen Brennan. (The Dissolve)

-If you’re interested, American Zoetrope’s short story magazine has the story that The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is based on. (All Story)

-It was nerdy as hell, but seeing the items in this month’s Profiles in History auction makes me realize that I really miss the show Hollywood Treasure. (Yahoo)

-It’s not only great music that is written on heroin, but great movies like Cool Runnings too. (Grantland)

-It’s great that a film like Pacific Rim can do so well in China that it can greenlight a sequel (nuts to all you jerks who didn’t go see it), but China hasn’t actually sent any of that fat wad of cash to the American studios in months. (THR)

-Christopher Doyle released an iPad/iPhone app this week called Away with Words (just like his debut film as a director), which commingles Doyle’s interest in words and images. It’s only 99 cents. (Apple)

-Of course you know Ellen is hosting the 2014 Oscars already. (@TheEllenShow)

Short film:

-The online love short film xoxosms is the anti-Catfish. (13m) (PBS POV)

Trailers, posters, etc:

-I don’t know if Ben Stiller’s Oscar hopeful The Secret Life of Walter Mitty will be sustainable for 2 hours, but it’s a hell of a trailer anyway. (Apple)

-Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Christian Bale and Robert De Niro in David O. Russell’s American Hairdo… I mean, American Hustle. (The Film Stage)

-Lynn Shelton’s Touchy Feely, which is out now on VOD and stars Rosemarie DeWitt, Ellen Page and Allison Janney. (Apple)

-Lucy Malloy’s Cuban crime drama Una Noche was a hit at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is finally going to see the light of day. (The Film Stage)

-The full trailer for Koreeda’s Like Father, Like Son which won the jury prize at Cannes. (Nippon Cinema)

-Ready for another beat generation movie? There is Kill Your Darlings, with Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan. (The Film Stage)

-I highly doubt Ip Man: The Final Fight will be Ip Man: The Final Ip Man movie, but it’s hot off winning the Daniel Craft award at the NY Asian Film Festival. (Don’t forget, Wong Kar Wai has an Ip Man film called Grandmasters coming out soon as well.) (Apple)

-Diablo Cody’s directorial debut, Paradise. If you’ve got DirecTV you can catch it before it hits theaters. (Collider)

CAN YOU ENVISION JESUS SAYING THAT?

The mantra of many believers in Christ is “Water baptism is important, however, it is not essential for anyone’s salvation.”
Can you envision Jesus saying that?

What if all the creed books, all the Bible commentaries, and other books written about Bible were destroyed? What if the source for truth you had was the Bible and the Bible alone, then, what would you believe was the purpose of water baptism? Would you still believe that water baptism was not essential for salvation?

    THE BIBLE

Ephesians 5:25-26…as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for it, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, (NKJV)

Ephesians 5:25-26….as Christ showed to the church when he died for her, 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by baptism and God’s word; (The Living Bible—Paraphrased)

Ephesians 5:25-26 ….as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, (NASB)

Can you imagine Jesus saying, “Water baptism is not essential to salvation?”

Acts 22:16 ‘And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’ (NKJV)

Acts 22:16 And now, why delay? Go and be baptized, and be cleansed from your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’ (The Living Bible —Paraphrased)

Acts 22:16 Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’ (NASB)

Can you envision Jesus saying, “Saul your sins were washed away three days ago on the road to Damascus, water baptism is not essential to salvation?”

Acts 2:38….let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins;….. (NKJV)

Acts 2:38 And Peter replied, “Each one of you must turn from sin, return to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; then you also shall receive this gift, the Holy Spirit. (The Living Bible— Paraphrased)

Acts 2:38 …each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins….. (NASB)

Can you envision Jesus saying, “Water baptism is not essential to forgiveness of sins?”

Mark 16:16 …..and is baptized will be saved… (NKJV)

Mark 16:16…. and are baptized will be saved… (The Living Bible—Paraphrased)

Mark 16:16 …..and has been baptized shall be saved… (NASB)

Can you imagine Jesus saying, “Water baptism is important but not essential to salvation?”

IF YOU ONLY HAD THE BIBLE, WHAT WOULD YOU BELIEVE?

Creed books, Bible commentaries, and all other books explaining the Bible are not the infallible word of God. They are not God’s inerrant message to all mankind. Why would you not simply trust the Bible and the Bible alone for God’s truth given to mankind?
