McDonald’s to give away books instead of toys with Happy Meals in honor of National Family Literacy Day

From Nov. 1-14, you can feel a little bit better about stopping by McDonald’s for a Happy Meal with your kids because, even if you aren’t really nourishing their bodies with healthy food, you can at least nourish their minds. The fast food giant is giving away books with its Happy Meals for a couple of weeks in honor of National Family Literacy Day (Nov. 1). McDonald’s partnered with Reading is Fundamental to get four books into the hands of kids, including one titled Doddi the Dodo Goes to Orlando, about a “happy-go-lucky bird Doddi who travels the world. She eats right because this dodo is always on the go-go.” We couldn’t find much info on the books, save for an entry on this blog by a mom who got one in a Happy Meal for her kid and says that the book is about a dodo bird who lives in Toledo, Ohio and plans to fly south to Orlando, but gets waylaid by a tornado, then journeys all around the world.
She says the author, John Montgomery, was very adept and finding words that end with “o” to keep up with the book’s theme. Also, she notes: “I was pleased to see she was eating fish, an apple, a carrot, some bread and drinking low-fat white milk!  Not a McDonald’s in site!”

She then notes that she’ll be making a few more trips to McDonald’s to score copies of the other books in the four-book Happy Meal series, but we found that somebody on Amazon.com already has all of them up for sale for a measly $8. I think that’s less than the cost of four happy meals, plus no added sodium, so bargain.
