Orange County approves funding for new Orlando soccer stadium
Tonight, the Orange County Commission approved funding for a new soccer stadium for the Orlando City Soccer Club. The commission voted 5-2 to approve a plan to use tourist tax dollars to help fund the stadium as part of a larger venues package.
According to the website for MLS soccer, Orlando City soccer execs and the MLS will next enter into negotiations to discuss making the team, which currently plays in the USL Pro league, a major league team.
In a statement on the Orlando City Soccer website, club president Phil Rawlins says he is “ecstatic” about the vote, and the club quotes MLS president Mark Abbot as saying that he’d like to see Orlando City become the next MLS team.
