Not dead on Thursday: Florida House Dems eulogize former Rep., retract
Not for nothing, but in the period of the past two hours, Florida House Democratic Leader Perry Thurston made a bit of a morbid mistake. And while we’re not fans of making light of such deathly matters, we can only imagine what the phone call for a correction to Thurston must have sounded like after he issued this statement at 2:26 p.m.
STATEMENT FROM HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADER PERRY THURSTON
On the Passing of Former Representative John Patrick Julien
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida House Democratic Leader Perry Thurston (D-Fort Lauderdale) issued the following statement:
“On behalf of the Florida House Democratic Caucus, I offer our sincerest sympathies on the passing of one of our most memorable colleagues, John Patrick Julien. We are deeply saddened and our thoughts and prayers are extended to his family and loved ones.
“John served in the House of Representatives in the 2010-12 term and represented District 104 in Miami-Dade County. He was a passionate advocate for his constituents, a thoughtful legislator, and a strong leader.
“Born in Haiti, John will be particularly remembered in Miami-Dade County and elsewhere for his advocacy for the Caribbean communities of South Florida. During his service in the Florida House of Representatives, John focused on tough issues, inspiring others to join him, and by his words, encouraged many to take action and get involved.
“Today, we have lost a great friend and Florida has lost a true public servant.”
EXCEPT FLORIDA HASN’T LOST JULIEN YET! By 4 p.m., communications director Mark Hollis retracted the statement with the following update. Gulp. Maybe because he’s close to death this kind of mistake is OK? Is this like that thing where the New York Times has your obit already written because you’re famous? Meh. A little dark Thursday afternoon humor for you. At least there were no explosions today. Oh, wait.
TO INTERESTED MEDIA:
Earlier today, inaccurate information was provided today to the Clerk of the Florida House of Representatives who announced to House members and staff that former Representative John Patrick Julien had passed. The Clerk of the House and I have since spoken directly to Julien’s medical surrogate who has confirmed that the former representative has not passed but is very ill.
A statement issued earlier today from House Democratic Leader Perry Thurston regarding former Representative Julien is retracted. I apologize for any confusion.
