News, links, etc:

-RIP Karen Black, who stuns in one of my favorite films, Five Easy Pieces. (NY Times)

-Also RIP Margaret Pellegrini, one of the last living Munchkins from The Wizard of Oz. (The Dissolve)

-Film critics had nothing to do with The Lone Ranger being a piece of shit. If you spend $250m on a set-piece western where you can’t have them fight in front of a Sears or drinking Dr Pepper, it’s your own fault you’re losing money. (Guardian)

-Blackfish has caused some changes to Pixar’s upcoming (2015) Finding Dory. It’ll probably get rewritten 20 more times anyway. (Arts Beat)

-So I went on an on about Snowpiercer last week, and now comes the bad news: Harvey Weinstein supposedly wants to cut 20 minutes and add voiceover. Meh. (Twitch)

-Harvey has done a ton of unwanted editing in the past as well. (

-The Van Halen News Desk unearthed the complete Eddie Van Halen song that Marty McFly plays to his father when he visits him in the radiation suit.

-Some of the early news from Disney’s D23 expo in Anaheim, including images from Pixar films The Good Dinosaur, Toy Story of Terror and Inside Out. (Playlist)

-Austenland: no boys allowed? (Guardian)

-Facebook: no boobies allowed. (IndieWire)

-Richard Brody does a rundown of one of the best genres: newspaper movies. (The New Yorker)

-Another old film was found this year, but this time it was a very strange Orson Welles film from his Mercury Theater days. (NY Times)

-On the psychology of the dual pilot system in Pacific Rim. (Guardian)

-My buddy Rahat has a couple of covers in this collection of the best Criterion fake covers. Breathless, The Social Network and Flight. (

Trailers, posters, etc:

-If none of my other hopes come true this year, at least let Spike Jonze’s Her be as good as the trailer. How come Windows 7 isn’t as emotionally supportive as the OS in this film? (Apple)

-The full trailer for Nicole Holofcener’s Enough Said, with James Gandolfini, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Catherine Keener and Toni Collette. (Apple)

-The Austin Film Fest winner, Sparrow Dance, about an agoraphobic actress who falls for the plummer but looks so much better than that description. (IndieWire)

-Final trailer for Ender’s Game. (Apple)

-The international trailer for Catching Fire. (Thompson on Hollywood)

-Naomi Watts is Diana. (Twitch)

-The best fake trailers from real movies. (
