The root of being nerdy is not pop-culture minutiae cataloged by an encyclopedic mind; it’s the satisfaction of discovering more information about a subject that sincerely intrigues you. And not in a general way like “I fucking love science” (not that there’s anything wrong with that), but in a meaningful way that contributes to your improved understanding of what’s around you and what exactly it is that you like about it. For the fourth installment of Nerd Nite Orlando, we are treated to three discussions by outed nerds whose interests are human behavior (why do our thoughts sometimes differ from our emotions?), real-life superheroes (what exactly waits at the intersection of physical strength and social activism?) and bacteria (are we so obsessed with killing germs we are eliminating our species?). Looks like what we got here is an invested batch of nerds cultivating thoughtful discourse aaaaand maybe also a bacterial revolution. Admirable. – Ashley Belanger
