The race is on: Urban ReThink hosts 2nd Annual Broomstick Pony Derby
Saturday, May 4 – 2nd Annual Broomstick Pony Derby
625 E. Central Blvd.
free for spectators, $20 registration per person
For more than a month now, jockeys of all ages have assembled at Urban ReThink for a series of broomstick pony-making workshops. And hopes are high that, with the help of local artists including Ibex Puppetry, one of these handmade steeds will place first in this year’s Broomstick Pony Derby. One last-chance workshop, along with a pre-race party, will go down on Thursday, May 2, at Urban ReThink, and then the horses hit the pavement along Central Boulevard (between Eola Drive and Summerlin Avenue) on race day for .131- and .262-mile gallops. While this race can’t exactly be considered “the greatest two minutes in sports” (unless you run really, really fast), the day will surely be cloaked in true derby fashion: Pull out the pastels and your finest headwear for the pre-race pony parade; mingle over cocktails and bites from Thornton Park area businesses; and then move it and shake it with music by DJ Si. Here’s hoping your racing bets are right on the money. And if not, no worries, as all proceeds benefit the Urban Think Foundation’s community-based programs. – Aimee Vitek
