Indie-psych band the Features tonight at the Social
Friday, May 24 – The Features
54 N. Orange Ave.
Continually indefinable indie-psych dwellers the Features teased the world by releasing a self-titled LP this year, leading some of us to wonder if they were now ready to explain just who they are and what their sound is. But if anything, the album only further evidences their exciting versatility. It’s impossible to tune out the stylistic shifts, which makes it sound like a demanding listen, except the overwrought musings of their lyrics are nestled into danceable New Wave pop (as on “The New Romantic”), and this makes enjoying the album with a trusting abandon a fairly simple task. From the sparkly frenzy of “In Your Arms” to the near panic-attack of “This Disorder,” and beginning with the rainy-day dreariness of album opener “Rotten,” the Features recall a flurry of extolled bands from Neil Young to Depeche Mode, yet still stand out for all the right reasons. – Ashley Belanger
