Fringe Review: Mr. Robb Goes to the Fringe

May 12, 2013

fullThe critical lexicon shouldn’t include phrases like “Hey, I couldn’t do it.” It’s hard to keep that thought at bay, though, when you’re watching someone like Robb Zeiser perform his feats of dexterity and concentration. He juggles metal tumblers. He holds cardboard blocks aloft in precarious, Escher-like formations. He balances more things on his face than a Kardashian does on New Year’s Eve. Meanwhile, I can’t even reach for the remote without the battery compartment spilling open and AAs rolling under the credenza.

Zeiser has appeared everywhere from Disney’s Hollywood Studios to The Tonight Show. In the process, he’s cultivated a winning comedic persona: kind of a slightly less disheveled Doc Brown, with an ability to poke fun at the audience and himself in equal measure. That stands him in good stead on those occasions when a stunt doesn’t go exactly as planned – which, at the preview performance I attended, happened a bit more often than he would probably have preferred. But any minor hiccups were forgotten the instant he launched into the show’s rousing finale, which involved a bowl full of eggs and not one but two carefully set tables. By that point, I had long since dropped my cell phone on the floor and lost it in the darkness. In other words, I think we all know who won this round, folks.

Note: This review is based on a preview performance that the press was invited to attend.
