Ya Missed Out: March Edition

Set and Setting

Very occasionally, because I go out sort of a lot (I’m kind of a lush, some might say), I have the delightful experience of being in the right place at the right time. It happened once at Crooked Bayou, years ago, the first time I saw Jacuzzi Boys play. That shit was ridiculous, and next week, I’m writing a story about the Boys to promote their upcoming show at Fox Fest (they haven’t been here in foreeeeeever). It happened again when I got free tickets to see this really girly fest whose name I can’t even remember, and I almost left cuz it just wasn’t my vibe – but then Samantha Crain came onstage and MAN, did she give me a reason to stick around. (Crain’s new release Kid Face was recorded at Tiny Telephone and is, in my opinion, her best yet.)

ANYWAY, the point of this is just to say that when you’re living in a town like Orlando, where there aren’t a million national bands playing every night like other cities, it’s very easy to get the feeling like nothing happening on any given night is gonna be better than what you could see if you just stayed home on YouTube. But! If you are willing to take a chance on more shows, featuring acts with white-washed, forgettable names like William Tyler (March 8, Will’s Pub) or overlooked small bands from other Florida cities, like St. Pete’s Set and Setting (March 26, Will’s Pub), you’d be in the same position I am now, with my jaw on the floor and thanking, thanking, thanking whatever instinct (or maybe more apt, whatever instincts I had to fight) that put me in those audiences on those nights. I’m going to try my damnedest to keep up with what’s going on, so you don’t have to suffer when I do these monthly updates, which I’ll be rather smugly calling, “Ya Missed Out.” Don’t feel bad, though, cuz I probably missed a bunch of stuff, too. If you think I should know about something I lamely missed out on, tell me in the comments?
