Photo Gallery: Kings Bowl Orlando Media Preview
After being derided for decades as a middlebrow pastime for drunk dads, bowling is suddenly hot again, at least in Orlando's tourist corridor. Splitsville recently opened its lanes in Downtown Disney's defunct Virgin Megastore, and Universal is building a bowling facility into their new Cabana Bay Beach Resort. Add to that alley avalanche the Kings Bowl, opening this Monday (4/15/13) on International Drive.
I stopped by Kings during Friday's media preview to snap the following photos. As you can see, the retro-hip interior isn't anything like the Gooding's supermarket that used to occupy the building. High-end amenities include automated scoring computers, elaborate lighting, and private rooms with their own lanes. Kings is also proud of their extensive scratch-made menu and unusual alcoholic offerings.
Bar food classics like sliders and wings get upscale execution, and there are surprising choices like fish stew and steak tips; everything I sampled was excellent. Likewise the libations, like the Wonka-esque grape concoction frothing with dry ice. There are even two tables with built-in chilled beer taps for the brew equivalent of VIP bottle service.
Kings' 22 lanes will be open to the public on Monday night, then close for two days of private events before beginning regular operations. After 6pm, the facility is restricted to 21 and older only, so leave the kids at home. See their website for more information.
