BENDITO MACHINE IV – FUEL THE MACHINES

★★★

An unnamed protagonist embarks on a journey to a destination unbeknownst to the viewer after receiving a phone call. The protagonist travels by way of various whimsical means of transportation, including an airship and a roller coaster that looks like it was designed by Rube Goldberg. The waterway traveled on the hero’s journey is riddled with pollution and litter giving the film an underlying message about environmentalism and a direct dig at Shell Oil.

Although this short was made using flash animation it was stylized to resemble silhouette animation. Fans of silhouette animation pioneer Lotte Reiniger are bound to appreciate this work. However, viewers short on patience may start to feel anxious for the protagonist to reach his destination. The moment the hero arrives somewhere he just sets off again using another ridiculous means of transportation. There’s a bit of a surprise ending when the protagonist finally arrives at his destination involving something that looks like it was lifted directly out of Fantastic Planet.
