The Local Cool: Yo Gabba Gabba! LIVE

Really Fucking Cool Kitten Head

The Yo Gabba Gabba! gang is coming to town. Yes, that includes hip hop legend Biz Markie. The hyper-colorful and mostly nonsensical children’s program Yo Gabba Gabba! started airing on Nick Jr. in 2007. In addition to teaching younglings about nutrition, hygiene, and other mainstays of preschool age programming the show also features beat boxing lessons from Biz Markie. There’s also a segment called Cool Tricks were they teach kids things like breakdancing. The show also features musical guests, mostly indie rock bands that one wouldn’t expect to find on a show for toddlers.

The TV show’s unusual format is the result of unlikely creators. Yo Gabba Gabba! wasn’t developed by a network. Instead, two indie musicians created it, The Aquabats’ frontman Christian Jacobs and Majestic’s frontman Scott Schult. They developed the show due to their displeasure with existing programming options available to their kids. Neither of them had prior experience in broadcast television. They did however have a few friends in the music industry, which helped them round out their cast with DJ Lance Rock, Biz Markie, and DEVO’s frontman Mark Mothersbaugh. Unfortunately, Mothersbaugh isn’t part of the live show, but you can still expect to see Brobee, Muno, Foofa, Toodee, Plex, DJ Lance Rock, and Biz Markie.
