A lot of good can come from darkness – other than scary monsters and the boogeyman. The community of Harmony, Fla. knows this all too well, as it enters its 10th year of the Dark Sky Festival.

Held in the Harmony Town Square, this stargazing affair offers more than 50 telescopes available for public viewing of stars, planets and our own satellite: the moon. What could be more enchanting than viewing our moon through a telescope? How about two mobile planetariums, a kids’ zone, live music and Star Wars character appearances?

Representatives from NASA, Seminole State College Planetarium, area scientists and other experts are expected to turn out for this event and enlighten guests about the benefits darkness can have on mother nature. Even a variety of high school students will demonstrate their knowledge in robotics.

Let’s just say that you’re going to leave this event a little brighter than when you arrived. Harmony’s full-time conservation director, Greg Golgowski agrees: “Our hope is to increase awareness of the effects of light pollution and offer simple solutions in a fun atmosphere.”
