One of Sundance’s most provocative films was secretly filmed at … Disneyworld

One of the most-buzzed-about films showing at Sundance this week was filmed surreptitiously at Disneyworld in Orlando and Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. The movie, called Escape From Tomorrow, is about a horndog dad who takes his family on vacation to the Magic Kingdom. From what we’re reading on Rotten Tomatoes and various indie film blogs, the movie actually captured Disney characters, rides and iconic scenery. It has everyone atwitter about how the hell the director and his crew managed to make a movie inside the Magic Kingdom without getting caught. It all had to be done on the down-low so the hyper-controlling Disney empire didn’t squish it like a bug before it could be screened. From a story in the LA Times this week:

It is one of the strangest and most provocative movies this reporter has seen in eight years attending the Sundance Film Festival. And it may well never be viewed by a commercial audience.

Sitting at a Park City café shortly after the screening ended, Moore, 36, is trying to take deep breaths. The director has been living the last three years in a state of heightened tension, fearful that Disney would find out about his stealth project and try to quash it.

The filmmaker strongly encouraged anyone who worked on the film not to tell anyone, not even close friends, what they were working on. He was so nervous about a potential blabbermouth at a postproduction house that he took the movie to South Korea to edit, where he has been traveling to, on and off, from Los Angeles for the last two years.

“It got really tense for a while,” Moore said of his home and personal life. His wife knew what he was up to; many friends didn’t.

You can watch the trailer here to get an idea what the film is like, though it doesn’t reveal any recognizable Disney imagery. We hope that the movie eventually makes its way to Orlando for a screening, though everyone seems to think Disney’s going to lawyer up and shut this movie down before it gets very far.
