Photo Gallery: New French Bakery at Epcot

In this week’s edition of Live Active Cultures, I take a magnifying glass to the darker aspects of Disney’s new MyMagic+ program, which promises the “cruisification” for the theme park experience.

On the brighter side, some of Mickey’s money has been spent lately on things that actually impact WDW guests in a positive way. Case in point: the newly expanded bakery in Epcot’s France pavilion, which transformed one of the parks most popular but overcrowded quick-service dining options into a much more pleasant dining experience.

The new bakery, which uses real estate reclaimed from the exit of the pavilion’s travelogue theatre, features brightly-lit pastry displays, dual serving lines to increase capacity, and charming scenic treatments like chandeliers and rustic ceiling timbers.

Best of all, the food is edible and reasonably priced. On a recent visit I had a bowl of rich lobster bisque (nearly identical to that served in the pricier restaurant next door, save for the absence of any lobster chunks) and a savory hot ham and cheese croissant (with creamy béchamel and gruyere) for about $10, a great deal by Disney standards.

If you stop by Epcot’s mini-Paris for a snack, be sure to swing by the superb Impressions de France film. It’s been upgraded to digital projection for seamless transitions across the multiple screens, making the park’s last original opening-day attraction look less dated than many of its more modern neighbors.
