Trevor Watts and Veryan Weston perform live at Timucua White House
Sunday, July 8 – Trevor Watts and Veryan Weston
Timucua White House
2000 S. Summerlin Ave.
The Civic Minded 5 presents their last concert of the season (programming picks back up in the fall) with a pair of artists the group has wanted to present since first forming up back in the mists of ’90s history. Saxophonist Trevor Watts came up through the ’60s British blues scene, building chops at London’s Marquee Club and later moving into an African-inflected free-jazz style. In the 1990s Watts began playing with pianist Veryan Weston, whose compositional style was honed through film scores for Derek Jarman and time served in jazz outfits Stinky Winkles and AMM. Weston’s sound (though, perhaps, not his performance style) is reminiscent of Cecil Taylor, an early CM5 concert presentation; the duo of Weston and Watts embodies the uncompromisingly experimental spirit of the Civic Minded 5. Once again we marvel that out of only six U.S. dates, Orlando is one, proving that the Timucua White House has cemented its international reputation as one of the hottest venues for creative music in the country. – Jessica Bryce Young
