Scenes from the Orlando City Soccer match against Stoke City

July 30, 2012
By

On Saturday night, the Orlando City Lions – our pick for Best Came-Out-of-Nowhere Team in our 2012 Best of Orlando issue – played a match against the Stoke City Football Club at the Florida Citrus Bowl.

The fans were rowdy, the crowd was pumped and the players were dead serious.

I’m no soccer expert, so I won’t even try to give a rundown – you can read the match report here for details – but suffice to say, even though our team lost, they held their own. The score at the end of the match was 1-0 Stoke City, and you’ve got to give our guys some credit:  Stoke City, who hail from Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England, has been around since 1863. They’re one of the oldest football clubs in existence. Our team, on the other hand, has only been in town since 2010 and held their first match in 2011. For a young team, they seem to be killing it out there.

Thanks to photographer Rob Bartlett for sharing some photos from the game. Click the images in the gallery for a larger view of each photo.

Orlando City is also Stoke City’s ‘Sister club” and Adrian Heath who is the current manager of Orlando is an old player from Stoke City before moving to Everton. so the two clubs are very closely linked………..:-)
