Florida Independent calling it quits

April 4, 2012

Florida Independent logoThe Florida Independent, the online news source that launched in 2010 with a mission of writing stories that would “positively influence” public policy and debate, has announced that it’s closing up shop as of April 27.

“Since we launched in May 2010, we have simply been unable to build a strong enough donor base to sustain our operations past the end of April,” an announcement on the site reads. “The site will remain live, but we will cease publishing new content after April 27.”

The Florida Independent is part of the American Independent News Network, which was founded in 2006 as a nonprofit, nonpartisan online-only news network called the Center for Independent Media. It started out as a pilot program operating in Minnesota and Colorado, but quickly expanded it network to include sites covering seven states and Washington, D.C. In 2011, the American Independent News Network’s family of sites were the first online-only news sites granted admission into the Association of Alternative Newsmedia, a media trade organization to which Orlando Weekly belongs.

In 2011, the American Independent News Network shuttered the Iowa Independent, the Minnesota Independent, the Michigan Messenger and the New Mexico Independent. The Washington Independent, Colorado Independent and the American Independent News Network are still posting new content.
