This is what will replace Bar-BQ Bar, Eye Spy and Sky Sixty

August 1, 2014

We were just as shocked as the rest of you when news got around that Bar-BQ Bar, Eye Spy and Sky Sixty would all close by the end of August. So we put a call out to Gerard Mitchell at the Social/Beacham to see if he could shed light on what was going on. Mitchell told us that the landlord offered the lease on all three spaces to the Social/Beacham after an agreement could not be reached with the previous owner, Ashley Mccammon Dishman. Respectful of the culture at each of these beloved downtown spots, Mitchell has invited all the existing staff to remain on when three new(ish) clubs open after Sept. 1, and he says he expects the staff to remain largely the same at the new bars.

Eye Spy and Sky Sixty will exist much as they do currently, with very little change. Eye Spy will be called Spy Bar, and Sky Sixty will become Sky Bar (“which is what most people call it anyway,” Mitchell points out). Bar-BQ Bar is the only one being somewhat overhauled (although all will have renovations), becoming Old ’64, which Mitchell describes as still a dive, but with craft options for those who are interested in a more sophisticated drink. All three bars will be managed by the same managers as the previous clubs. Sky Bar will still be bouncin’ under the music direction of DJ Cliff T, and Spy Bar will remain loyal to Eye Spy’s DJ Perry. (FYI: 64 is a reference to the club’s street address, 64 N. Orange Ave.)

For Old ’64, Mitchell is excited to have another space for people to drink cheaply and pre-game shows at the Social and the Beacham, as well as a place to point national artists to hang out before and after their shows. As for shows that occasionally cropped up on Bar-BQ’s calendar, Mitchell says they are definitely in support of live music downtown and wouldn’t rule it out, considering Bar-BQ Bar manager Preston Dehler, who also DJ’s and coordinates music, will continue to manage Old ’64.

It happens that Sept. 1 is Labor Day, so plan your first visit to see all the changes for Sept. 2 or later.
