Happy birthday, Donald Duck!

June 9, 2014
By

One of the world’s most enduring avian characters is celebrating 80 years young today. On June 9, 1934, Donald Duck made his debut in Disney’s The Wise Little Hen, a one reel adaptation of centuries-old folk tale The Little Red Hen. Ever since, Donald’s been delighting us with indecipherable speech patterns, a lightning quick temper and that unwavering Iggy Pop-esque devotion to always being half naked.

Donald has now lived approximately seven times longer than the average bird of his species (American Pekin), an astounding feat when you consider what this guy’s blood pressure must be like. Would we have our feathery little cherub any other way, though? Some character has to represent the U.S. ideal of boiling frustration in response to all inconveniences. Sure as heck ain’t Mickey.

So take off your pants and furiously quack at something, it’s Donald Duck’s birthday! You won’t look nearly as good when you hit 80. That’s worth gnashing your teeth over.
